Stonewall are an organisation I have had a great deal of respect for, which only makes it worse that they have seriously unimpressed me this evening.

Lori brought this to attention on Twitter asking whether anyone else thought it read “like Stonewall’s CEO reckons having more than one spouse is like fecking animals (or kids)? “

“There are people who, even in 2012, are still comparing gay people to bestialists, polygamists and paedophiles. It’s not unkind to remind them of that and the harm it does to the self-esteem of young gay people”

Sadly they did, and I do, and it makes me very angry.

Are we to assume Stonewall don’t consider poly-discrimination a problem like, say, I don’t know .. homophobia? Or are we to assume that they do, and don’t care because it’s “not their division”. What about the self-esteem of young polyamorous/non-monogamous people?

Yes, polyandry is illegal. So was civil union between two members of the same sex not so long ago. Polyamory IS effectively polygamy/polyandry if it were permitted to be anything other than a casual under-the-legal-eye arrangement.

I’m just so sick of organisations whose remit is promoting tolerance for a group needing to do so by promoting out-group intolerance! Do we really believe that this is zero sum? That one minority group’s right to acceptance threatens another’s?

It’s not just Stonewall but this upsets me more as I had thought Stonewall were better than that..
